Meet Our Team

The Epoch team is detail-oriented, understanding, and diverse. We appreciate the value of follow-up, and do what we say we’re going to do. In our world, maintaining focus is the key to a successful project. Everyone contributes. Each member of our team has a purpose and each offers a high-end skill set.

  • Kyle Copelin | Principal

Kyle has pursued a balance of functionality and aesthetics since beginning his career 15 years ago in New York City. There he developed a team based skill set allowing for the successful completion of high rise developments in addition to hospitality and mixed use projects around the world. Kyle continued his career when relocating to West Palm Beach, FL where he managed project types including places of worship, K-12, colleges and universities, municipal, hospitality, and mixed use/midrise developments.

Returning home to South Bend, Kyle began to realize the architectural market transitioning and an obvious gap in services and technology that needed to be grasped in order to affectively serve his clients. In 2012 he decided it was time to dedicate his career to developing Epoch; providing clients with solutions achieved by investing in the best decision makers and problem solvers available to clients. Today Kyle offers a diverse portfolio serving as a testament to his dedication to clients and the success of their projects.

Outside the office, Kyle enjoys time with his family and competing in a variety of endurance events ranging from local 5k’s to Ironman triathlon to multi-day adventure racing with his wife, Marghi. When not training or running Epoch, Kyle most enjoys being at home with Marghi and their dog, Cadence.

  • Rich DeLong | CAD Technician

Rich joined the Epoch team in 2013.

Having a broad education and diverse career path Rich’s approach to projects is comprehensive. His construction background and 3D modeling skills help him to identify problems and design solutions, saving time and money. Whether it’s working through a construction detail or offering input in a brainstorm session, Rich comes to the table with positive energy and balance.

Given his history in the construction industry and technological knowledge, Rich enjoys sharing ideas with coworkers; teaching and learning new skills while keeping existing ones up to date.

In his free time he enjoys spending time with family and friends, working in the yard, and exploring the shores of the great lakes.

  • Nathan Beers | CAD Technician

Nathan joined the Epoch team in 2014.

Nathan is a recent college graduate having studied architecture at Vincennes University. As a CAD technician he thoroughly enjoys working in Revit, a parametric platform. Nathan thrives from the diversity of project types he is able to work on, a team oriented approach and a collective and fun office environment. While he contributes to projects in many different ways, his technological expertise continues to elevate the commitment Epoch provides their clients.

Architecturally Nathan enjoys projects involving adaptive reuse as well as any projects in which older industrial buildings are repurposed either as residential, commercial or a mixture of both. He is also a big fan of 13th and 14th century castles and other architectural features of that time frame. He prefers architectural elements that serve a purpose rather than being strictly cosmetic.

In his spare time Nathan enjoys cooking and bicycling as well as most other outdoor or sports activities. He is a handyman and likes working on “projects”, some of which are quick and clean, others… well it’s an ongoing process for those.

  • Brian Kane | Project Architect

Brian joined the Epoch team in 2014.

He brings with him over 17 years of experience, ranging from traditional architectural practices and services to leading the design division for a land development, real estate, and property management company. These experiences have informed Brian both in the role of Architect and as Owner, and as such lend a unique perspective to the design and construction of successfully managed and executed projects.

Brian adds a creative dynamic to the Epoch team while coordinating small and complex projects ranging from historic rehabilitation to state of the art living units in multifamily development. His attention to detail is an asset realized by all team members, including owners and contractors.

Having been born and raised in the Florida panhandle, Brian’s sense of discovery for new places has taken him both back to his adopted Midwest home of South Bend and clear across the globe. From collecting mosquitoes with his partner, Neil, in the Solomon Islands as part of Neil’s efforts at malaria eradication, to scaling the Jain temple of Shravanabelagoda in south India, Brian will forever be on the quest for finding new inspirations.

  • Billy Van Elk | Project Architect

Billy joined the Epoch team in 2015.

Billy graduated from Ball State University in 2005 and decided to take some time away from architecture to explore the world.  Living and travelling throughout China, Tibet, and Thailand gave him a unique perspective on urban developments and how cultural tendencies are expressed through the built environment.  Returning to the architectural field in 2008 with a renewed passion for the profession he now relishes the challenge of a new client or new building type.

Over the past decade Billy has worked on a variety of building types in educational settings, mixed use and multi-family developments, sporting facilities, healthcare, and libraries.  He realizes that each project has a specific and quantifiable solution which can be found through researching and understanding how people will use each building.  It is this passion to understand the true needs of individual people that drives him forward on each new design.

When not in the office Billy enjoys travelling the world with his wife and daughter, sampling local food and breweries, and taking photographs of both the natural world and great architecture we’ve built within it.  He is also unabashedly a soccer fan cheering for the USMNT, Tottenham Hotspur, and Indy Eleven.
